Would like to meet a real princess? Easy, there I am: Elisabeth, Princess of Hesse,
Heiress Presumptive of Saxony. I know you'll picture glittering parties and popping
flashlights. Far from that! In my childhood my family was so poor, I was
not even allowed to attend court balls as I
had no proper dress. Like Cinderella, only without the fairy godmother.
After my wedding, things did not get much better. For my father-in-law's taste I was
too rebellious. I was accused of adultery. I sneered
at the intriguer during the day and spent sleepless and lonesome nights crying.
When my husband died, I was to grow old at Rochlitz castle quietly and without much
ado. No way! Instead, I got the Reformation to Rochlitz
-- even when my father-in-law, George, threatened me with sword and fire. In those
times, all hell broke loose in Rochlitz and Mittweida. The young and fiery pastors turned
the old world upside down. And I was part of it!
